Prompt #5 - Your Happy-Clappy Palette of the Day

What is your favourite colour?

If there is a choice of getting something in one colour or another - like notebooks, or fountain pens - I usually tend towards the blue-green spectrum.

But really, I’m more drawn towards how different colours work together.

Some of my favourite combos are:

  • Mustard yellow and dark blue

  • Teal and aubergine

  • Turquoise, pink and yellow

  • Green, yellow and white

  • Dark green and baby pink

  • Rainbow 🌈

I also love looking at colour palettes. I have a whole Pinterest Board dedicated to collecting palettes. I’ll probably never use them for anything, but simply looking at them makes me happy.

As we know, colours can have a very positive effect on our mood. So today we’ll create using your happy-clappy colour palette.

The Activity: Draw in the colours that make you happy today

Step 1: Create your palette

Use Coolors to generate a colour palette that makes you happy. You can start by generating random palettes. If you see a colour that really speaks to you, you can click on the little lock symbol to keep it. You can then continue to generate palettes including that colour, and keep locking colours until you have a palette that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I could do this all day, by the way

Step 2: Create in your palette

Now create an image in your colours. If you draw digitally, on the computer or on a tablet, you can use the exact colour codes from your palette. If you’re going analogue, you might not have the exact colours available, but you can mix paint or watercolour to get as close as you can. Or use the closest crayon colour available.

You can draw any motif you like, or simply start putting colours on paper and go abstract.

Step 3: Take it in

Admire your work. How did you use the colours? Did you include them all or focus only on a few? How does looking at your drawing make you feel? Keep in mind, that we're not here to judge artistic execution. This is not an art class. There are no grades.

By the way, you can do this activity over and over again. Depending on your mood, you’ll get a different happy-clappy palette each time. See if you start recognising some recurring themes in your colour choices.

My Example

Here is my happy-clappy palette of the day. There are some of my classics in there, like yellow and shades of turquoise. The purple and orange-red were definitely a "mood of the day” kinda choice. Most of my happy palettes are always very bright colours with earth tones being notably absent.

And here is my (digital) painting created with that palette. I went for a "Bob-Ross mountains and happy little trees” kinda vibe. Another recurring theme that makes me happy.

I hope you enjoyed this prompt and that drawing in your palette brought you tons of joy.

Haven't tried to do any painting with it, might use it in one of the minis I have to paint, but here it is:
